It's a sad old day, we're eff if they get someone even half competent.
They wont. The competent ones have proper jobs .

Well whoever we (England) appoint is sure to be better than Steve Clarke.
Unless it's Lampard. Or Gerrard. Or Warburton.

Further than Scotland have ever been in any tournament and matching Ireland’s best ever tournament record.
He deserves a fair hearing.
Scotland have been in the last 8 in the Euros.

After a lifetime fretting about Bobby Robson, Eriksson, Capello, I’m old enough to recognise failure in international football is tattooed on the English soul. Don’t care a jot who they appoint.

A competent manager can actually do a lot with these players. Southgate was holding them back. A manager who knows what they’re doing can take them all the way. As much as I hate to say it.Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
A competent manager might get a draw against a decent side earlier in a tournament.

Absolutely. The argument I've been having with people today. Appreciate this sounds incredibly arrogant but we've not beaten a single better team in the knockouts.
Yeah sure we've beaten Sweden, Senegal, Switzerland, Slovakia, Denmark and a very poor Germany in knockout football but every single time we've played a better team- Italy at Wembley, France at the last World Cup, Spain this Euros etc we've lost.
We were a few seconds from going out in the RO16 at this Euros yet people seem to have just forgotten that.

Who are Scotland going to get who’s better though? Moyes? Too similar to Clarke. Think Clarke will stay,

If the Euro's have shown anything, it's time for old duffers like Deschamps, Southgate, Koeman and that balloon at Portugal to step aside and let a new, fresh generation come through.Agree about them stepping aside, but age has nothing to do with it. At 74, Arsene Wenger is 20 years older than Deschamps for example and he'd have France playing an exciting attacking brand of football with those players at his disposal compared to Deschamps' cautious pish.
Martinez & Southgate are both young managers, 50 & 53, but have stunk the tournament out with their mindset, not their age.
Agreed. Postecoglou and Marcelo Bielsa are both older than Southgate and both are as dynamic as they come. Nought to do with age.

Nooo, come back sweet prince!
How long are the pundits down there going to blame it all on managers? I think they've, at the very least, had squads individually as good as this one, maybe better and still not won anything.

This is almost like when the huns lose a manager. The Engerlund fans are arguing about whether Klopp or Tuchel would be the better option, when they're probably going to end up with Carsley.

International football is just not a draw to any top manager with anything left in the tank.
I mean, Southgate got the job in the first place, that's the track right there. It's the same as all those moonunit USMNT fans calling for Klopp and Guardiola when they'll likely end up with Herve Renard.
Potter will be a good as it gets.

It will be interesting to find out whether this is actually a great squad being poorly managed, or a decent squad being managed to a decent level. Personally, seen decades of English fans/media routinely overestimating the quality and confusing cost with value, my suspicion is that it's the latter.
Southgate's resilient style, combined with an uncanny ability to avoid the difficult side of the draw probably had them punching about their weight (or slightly above) at tournament level.
In my entire life, it's always been the next manager will be the one to take their team of superstars to their rightful glory and it never happens. I suspect the next guy comes in, doesnt play a pragmatic game and goes out at last 16/8 again and they all clamour for the days of Southgate.

Ever read a post and do a double take thinking "did I not just write that?" only to realise that no... I haven't written it yet. No need now, this is 100% in agreement with my thoughts, though I'm maybe more fully convinced that Southgate definitely had them out performing, whether by pragmatism or by obscene luck.

Everyone should applaud the biggest achievement and best talent Southgate has . That is in 3 out of 4 tournaments his and other group stage results has meant every decent team seem to end up in other half of draw . It’s quite a talent to have that much luck once but 3 times is world class. Only time it didn’t happen was only time they didn’t at least reach semi (and time it was only to semi they actually had difficult game )

I reckon they might offer it to Howe. He'll turn it down as his backroom staff won't go abroad for games.

Bellamy confirms as Wales boss, wish him well!
No one I know (who gives a mwnci's about Wales) has a clue how this will pan out. He talks a good game and clearly sees it as a massive honour BUT could start a row in an empty room. Results in the Nations League will be interesting and telling. If he starts badly and throws players under the bus thinsg will unravel quickly.
Hoping for Lampard or Slippy for England. Much talk about them having the best squad at the Euros probably skewed by those saying it mainly watching EPL highlights. A decent manager would test this theory for sure.
